Regretful GM Kills Anti-bus campaign

B.C. ads mocked transit users
Bus riders didn't find barbs funny

Destination Reads: Creeps & Weirdos

"Bacterial Stew" and "Hours of Hell"

"General Motors of Canada Ltd. has apologized for mocking public transit in some recent newspaper advertisements. The country's biggest auto maker said yesterday it was sorry and had ditched dealer ads showing transit buses and destination windows on them with phrases such as "creeps & weirdos" and "wet dog smell."Under the bus pictures, the ads tell readers that "luckily, there's an affordable alternative" — a Chevrolet Cavalier or a Pontiac Sunfire."The ads will never see the light of day again," said Stew Low, GM's director of public relations."

The ads were in the Georgia Straight. In 1991 GM also ran a campaign with the word "the bus sucks." (source: Toronto Star March 27, 2003 (p. B1) BUSINESS REPORTER, Tony Van Alphen)
