Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet. One way that teachers and students can use facebook is to use the site as a place to collaborate on projects. Teachers could also create a class page open to the class but closed to other members.

MySpace


my space logoMySpace is a free online community composed of personal profiles aimed foremost at a younger membership. A MySpace profile typically includes a digital photo and in-depth information about personal interests. The amount of detail included in the profile is up to the user and submitted voluntarily. MySpace policy requires users be at least 14 years of age to join. Members routinely send each other messages and “network” or socialize within the MySpace community. As members have moved away from MySpace there is still a significant presence of musical artists.

YouTube is an online public communications site. The site allows for registered users to upload and have available for the public their videos for viewing. Anyone who goes to the site can view the videos that are posted on this site. The videos are anything from beginner videos to more professional videos. YouTube was designed and then released in 2005 by three previous employees of PayPal, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. Google picked up on the wave of public communications, and purchased YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars. YouTube videos resources can be used in education. If schools allow YouTube, teachers can use the short videos to illustrate points or allow students to create projects using multimedia to post to YouTube. Through the preferences, students and teachers can set the users who they wish to allow. For teachers and students, there are also educational divisions like YouTube EDU

The community members upload and share videos and rate and comment on others' works. Although they say they are free and without strings, the site has advertisers and they openly solicit advertisers.
