Netiquette

Netiquette combines the two words "Internet" and "etiquette" to describe things you should and shouldn't do while communicating online. Your instructor may have posted a guide for your to follow.

Here are some basic rules:

  • No Yelling! Don't capitalize all letters while posting a thought or emailing someone. THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING, AND IT IMPLIES THAT YOU ARE ANGRY. Capitalize words only to highlight an important point or to distinguish a title or heading.

  • No Flaming! Never make hurtful comments toward someone or when referring to someone's work. Don't rant or use profanity. Use no language that could be construed as inappropriate. Hurtful comments and profanity are considered flaming.

  • Be careful when using humor or sarcasm; you never know how someone else will interpret it. Consider rewording your message if you think there is a possibility that someone may misunderstand.

  • Be respectful of diversity and respect the rights of other students. Acknowledge other students' ideas and opinions, even when you disagree. It's alright to disagree, but provide clear and thoughtful support for your views.

  • Use Standard English Grammar. Although many of your discussion posts and messages will be part of an ongoing conversation,
you should still use proper writing style.

  • Don't post inappropriate pictures, links or comments. Use your good judgment.

  • Give your posts meaningful subject titles related to your content to assist others in locating and responding to posts.

  • Quote the relevant message or excerpt when replying to messages so that others can see your point in context.

A simple rule to follow is to communicate in a friendly, respectful way.
