Rip- A Remix Manifesto
About the Film RIP: A Remix Manifesto
Montreal filmmaker, Brett Gaylor's Rip: A Remix Manifesto is an open source documentary about copyright and remix culture in the 21st century. With hundreds of collaborators, the film created over six years shatters the boundary between users and producers as it questions the differences between fair use and piracy. John Gomeshi, of CBC Q, calls the film, " The Sexiest film about copyright infringement I've ever seen." Winner of numerous awards, the film includes such notables as Lawrence Lessig, founder of Creative Commons, Cory Doctorow, culture critic, Brazil's minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and Girl Talk, a mashup musician. The Remixers' Manifesto
1. Culture Always builds on the past
2. The past always tries to control the future
3. Our future is becoming less free
4. To build free societies you must limit control of the past.
Thought provoking, the film or clips of the film could be used by educators to discuss copyright and the open source movement with colleagues and students.
Currently collaborators can contribute and remix the film to create RIP: A Remix Manifesto 2.0 at Open Source Cinema. The 2008 release is available as a free download at the Open Source Cinema link and it is available for purchase at the National Film Board or watch it below on YouTube.
